'Hocus Pocus 3' in the works at Disney

It looks like the Sanderson sisters still have more tricks up their sleeve as the fantasy comedy film Hocus Pocus will have a third installment soon.

Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, has revealed to the New York Times that Hocus Pocus 3 is in the works at the company. The film, however, is still in "very early" development.

This comes after the success of its second installment, which was released on the streaming platform Disney+. It landed in the top five of the most-streamed movies in 2022 with a total of 5.7 billion minutes viewed.

The original film premiered in cinemas way back in 1993. It follows a teenage boy lighting the so-called "Black Flame Candle" and resurrecting the legendary Sanderson sisters Winifred, Sarah, and Mary—a trio of witches who suck the life force out of children in an effort to stay young.

The sequel, meanwhile, sees the candle being lit again, bringing back the sisters who now have a thirst for revenge. It is up to three high-school students to stop the sisters before dawn on All Hallows' Eve.

Both movies star actresses Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary, respectively.

While it isn't set in stone yet whether they would all be reprising their roles, Midler previously expressed her enthusiasm to Entertainment Weekly about starting a franchise.

"I'd love to have a franchise—especially a character I love playing. If there was a third one, of course, I'd sign on, but I don't know how. I can't imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary, and our relationship," she said.

"After 30 years with no sequel to Hocus Pocus, I've always been envious of people who get to do their favorite character more than once. The fact that we got to do this finally, after 30 years of promoting the idea, I'm glad we got to do it," she added.
