Designer gives contemporary logos a retro makeover

By Kara Santos Published May 20, 2021 3:56 pm

All things vintage and retro have made a comeback in recent years.

While most logo and branding projects utilize modern design aesthetics in the current era, it’s not surprising to see design flashbacks that pull visual inspiration from the past.

Rafael Serra, a type designer and lettering artist based in Porto, Portugal recently shared his passion project to give popular logos the retro treatment.

The artist known as FAEL (@faelpt) on Instagram shared his redesigned logos of tech giant brands like Google, Apple, Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and Polaroid, along with globally recognized brands like Coca-Cola, Nike, Adidas, LEGO, and more on his social media accounts and online portfolios.

“Everything that’s retro or vintage is a source of inspiration for me. Making famous logos look retro was an idea that came naturally to me. Maybe because logos are timeless, or are supposed to be. It’s a fun and great exercise to go back in time,” Serra said in a feature in the design community platform Dribbble.

His stunning concept project redesigns contemporary logos in a vibrant retro style with instantly recognizable key elements. The extra elements and vintage color palettes evoke a very joyful and nostalgic feel.
