Cha Eun Woo has been accused of evading 20 billion won in taxes.

Korean news outlet Edaily reported that the National Tax Service in Korea has notified the singer-actor of tax liabilities amounting to more than 20 billion won (more than P800 million).

Per the report, the paper company founded by Cha’s mother had a service contract with Fantagio, the agency managing his boy group ASTRO, to support his entertainment activities. It added that under the agreement, profits were to be shared among Fantagio, the company, and Cha.

Fantagio has released an official statement to address the issue

“The key issue is whether a company established by Cha’s mother qualifies as a legitimate subject of taxation,” the agency said, per The Korea Times. “The company will actively clarify its position through appropriate legal procedures concerning the interpretation and application of tax law.”

Fantagio added that Cha and his team would cooperate with authorities. "Cha Eun-woo and his tax representatives will fully cooperate throughout the process to ensure it is concluded as swiftly as possible, and he will continue to faithfully fulfill all tax reporting and legal obligations as a law-abiding citizen.”

Cha’s camp has requested a pre-assessment review to dispute the tax authority’s decision.

Aside from being ASTRO’s singer and visual, Cha is also known for his roles in K-dramas such as True Beauty, Island, Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung, My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, and Decibel.
