Brad Pitt isn't taking too well the news that his 18-year-old daughter Shiloh has filed a request to drop "Pitt" from her surname.

A source close to the actor told PEOPLE that Pitt is "aware and upset" about his daughter's decision, which happened amid his legal battles with his ex-wife Angelina Jolie.

"He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name. He’s never felt more joy than when she was born. He always wanted a daughter," the source said.

"The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad," they added.

While Pitt is "still happy" with his current girlfriend Ines de Ramon, the distance from his children "pains him."

"He still loves all of his kids tremendously," another source close to Pitt told the news outlet. "This whole process has been very hard for the whole family."

Shiloh filed the request on May 27, when she turned 18 and became a legal adult. Once approved, her new name would be "Shiloh Jolie."

Shiloh isn't the only former couple's child dropping the surname "Pitt" as their youngest daughter Vivienne had her name appear as "Vivienne Jolie" in the playbill for the new Broadway musical The Outsiders.

Jolie and Pitt got together after co-starring in the 2005 movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Apart from Shiloh and Vivienne, they share four other children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, and Knox.

The couple fell apart in September 2016 when Jolie accused Pitt of raping her during a plane trip from France to Los Angeles and claimed that he "physically and verbally" assaulted her and their kids.

Despite being ruled legally single in 2019, the two actors' legal battle did not stop there as Pitt sued Jolie for allegedly selling her portion of their shared winery, Chateau Miraval, without consulting him.
