South Korean actor Na In-woo exempted from military service—here's why
South Korean actor Na In-woo has officially been exempted from military service after spending three years awaiting a call-up as a public service worker.
According to the Korean entertainment website Soompi, the Marry My Husband star is eligible for exemption as he didn't receive a summon for the schedule of his alternative service from the Military Manpower Administration within the three-year required time frame.
This follows the 30-year-old actor's Grade 4 classification or non-active duty during his military physical examination.
In case you didn't know, individuals classified as Grade 4 in South Korea's Military Service Act who are not summoned within three years are "granted peacetime exemption."
"It is true that Na In Woo has been exempted from military service by the Military Manpower Administration. Since it was based on the Military Manpower Administration's decision, we have no further comments to make," In Woo's agency, HANADA Company, said in a statement.
In the past, other Korean actors were also exempted from military service due to unfortunate accidents, failure to meet requirements, and other reasons.
These include Black Knight actor Kim Woo-bin, who was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2017; A Time Called You actor Ahn Hyo Seop, who was exempted due to his Canadian citizenship; Winter Sonata actor Bae Yong Joon, who didn't meet the standards required for eyesight, Hellbound actor Yoo Ah-in who failed multiple medical examinations to test his ability to serve due to brain tumor, and The Killing Vote actor Park Hae-jin who received an exemption in 2004 for a mental disorder, to name a few.
In-Woo debuted in 2013 with the musical Bachelor's Vegetable Store. He is best known for his roles in various Korean dramas and variety shows, including Mr. Queen, River Where the Moon Rises, Marry My Husband, and 2 Days & 1 Night.
