Trigger warning: This article contains mentions of an eating disorder.

Moira Dela Torre looked back on the time she struggled with bulimia during her weight loss journey.

During a media event of a slimming coffee brand, the singer recalled going on several diet types in 2020.

“I was vegan for a while. I did keto, I did intermittent (fasting). I did everything. I tried everything,” she said, according to a Philippine STAR report. “And I’m sorry, I have to say it, trigger warning ba, I became bulimic for two years from 2020 to 2022.”

The OPM singer shared that it worsened her situation as it made her gain more weight.

“And then when I stopped putting pressure on myself,” she said, “and when I just started allowing myself to just be, dun po parang kumalma ‘yung katawan ko.”

Dela Torre urged Filipinos not to be hard on themselves, noting things aren’t a quick fix.

She recalled finally losing weight gradually when she stopped trying too hard to shed some pounds.

“I think our bodies know when they are cared for properly,” she said. “Our bodies recognize when they are loved properly.”

She reminded everyone that weight can fluctuate but it’s through one’s heart that real change happens.

“I think before that weight loss,” she said, “it was more internal first.”

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by uncontrolled episodes of overeating or bingeing, usually within two hours.

This is followed by purging with methods such as vomiting or misuse of laxatives. Other methods include fasting or excessive exercise.

The health website said bulimia mostly affects females, and those who have the condition may be more likely to come from families with a history of eating disorders, physical illness, and other mental health problems.

While the cause of bulimia isn’t known, society and cultural ideals regarding weight value play a role, it added.
