Charlie Dizon on Carlo Aquino's proposal: 'Di ko inexpect kasi wala pa rin kaming one year nu’n'
Charlie Dizon bared that Carlo Aquino proposed to her less than a year into their relationship.
In an interview with Metro.Style, the actress said the proposal happened when they went to Thailand to celebrate her birthday in April last year. They went to the Songkran Festival, a three-day street party featuring water showers and water fights.
“Di ko inexpect na magpro-propose siya du’n kasi wala pa rin kaming one year nu’n,” she told the publication.
Little did Charlie know that Carlo, 38, already sought the blessing of her mom and dad, even siblings, who are living in California in the United States.
“’Yun na, nagpaalam na siya na magpro-propose na siya, ganu’n," she said, adding that Carlo had a video call with them.
She noted that it's only necessary for Carlo to reach out to them so they won't feel "bypassed."
“Kailangan talaga dumaan sa kanila,” she said, sharing she was surprised that Carlo already asked for her family's blessing. Upon knowing so, that's when she said yes.
Even before their wedding, Charlie said Carlo flew to the US alone to inform her family he's courting her.
For his part, Carlo said he spent three hours talking to Charlie's family while stuck in traffic from Commonwealth to Makati—as he was about to buy an engagement ring.
“Nakakatawa ’yung video call with her parents at ’tsaka sisters,” he said. "Ayaw maniwala ng mom niya na magpro-propose na ako.”
Popping the question
Carlo said he had to ask Charlie in a private place since Songkran was "messy." They dined in a restaurant for a 12-course meal, asking for the help of his Thai best friend and personal assistant of 14 years.
He also noted how Charlie won't wear a dress that night, thinking that his outfit request was because of the restaurant's policy. Otherwise, she thought it was a "casual hangout and nothing more."
“So busog na busog kami. Tapos nu’ng paalis na, sabi ko sa kaniya, ‘Ano nang plano natin? Ano nang next step?’” Carlo recalled.
Charlie thought Carlo was asking about their next travel destinations and gave him a list of countries she wanted to visit.
Carlo's friend then intervened, asking about the next chapter of their lives. That was when Carlo got down on his knee.
“So kaharap ko ’yung best friend [ni Carlo]. Pagtingin ko, nakaluhod na siya. So ’yun pala, magpro-propose siya. So hindi ako makapaniwala!” Charlie said.
Charlie, who was in so much disbelief, thought Carlo was just showing her a promise ring.
“Nakakatawa kasi hindi ako naniniwala nu’ng nag-propose siya," she said. "So like, lahat nu’ng kasama namin, tinatanong ko na ‘Prank ba ’to? ’Wag n’yong gagawin ’to sa’kin!’”
She noted how many times she shot proposal scenes, but it just hit different when it was already the real thing.
"As in sobrang nanginig ’yung tuhod ko. As in ganu’n ’yung feeling," she said.
Charlie and Carlo got married at a private resort in Silang, Cavite last June 9.
In January 2023, Carlo said he was in the "getting to know stage" with Charlie after getting spotted together in La Union. Charlie confirmed their romance in July of that year.
