Ian McKellen, 85, falls off stage during theater performance, expected to 'make a speedy and full recovery'
English actor Ian McKellen was taken to the hospital on June 17 after falling off the stage during a theater performance in London.
BBC News reported that McKellen, 85, was in a fight scene of Player Kings, a production of Henry IV, when he lost his footing and fell.
McKellen, who plays John Falstaff, had been circling a battle scene involving the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when the accident happened. The actor cried out while staff rushed to help.
The audience was evacuated from the theater and was told the evening show had been canceled, according to BBC News.
A theater spokesman said McKellen was in "good spirits" and, after a scan, is expected to "make a speedy and full recovery."
The performance next Tuesday, June 25, has been canceled "so that Ian can rest," the spokesman added. He is expected to be back on stage the following day, June 26, for a matinee performance of the play.
McKellen has acting credits in theater and on screen.
He's known for his role as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and Magneto in the X-Men movies.
On stage, he portrayed Richard II, Coriolanus, Iago, Richard III, King Lear, and Macbeth in the Shakespearean plays.
Player Kings began its 12-week run in April.
