Barry Keoghan says he no longer wants to ‘go outside’ due to online haters
Barry Keoghan has opened up about how online attacks on his appearance have kept him from wanting to go outside.
In an interview on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, the Saltburn star discussed how the negativity he has experienced throughout his career has begun to affect his lifestyle.
"There’s a lot of hate online. There’s a lot of abuse of how I look, and it’s kind of past the point of—you know, everyone goes through that… but it’s made me shy away. It’s made me really go inside myself, not want to attend places, not want to go outside," he explained.
"I say this being absolute pure and honest to you. It’s becoming a problem," he added.
While Keoghan tried to protect his mental health by staying off social media, he explained that he still can't help but want to go on the internet to see reactions whenever he attends an event. However, he lamented that most of the comments are "not nice."
When asked about finding time and space to enjoy his privacy, the actor said, "I don't have to hide away 'cause I am hiding away… I actually don't go to places because of these things."
"When that starts leaking into your art, it becomes a problem, because then you don’t want to even be on screen anymore," he added.
Keoghan further expressed his fears that his three-year-old son Brandon, whom he shares with his former girlfriend Alyson Sandro, would one day see the seething remarks hurled at him.
"It is disappointing for the fans, but it’s also disappointing that my little boy has to read all of this stuff when he gets older," he said.
Apart from his performance in the 2023 psychological drama film Saltburn, Keoghan is also known for starring in Eternals, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Immortal Man.
He previously dated singer Sabrina Carpenter, but the two have since split in 2024. Following the breakup, however, Keoghan claimed to be receiving threats from Carpenter's fans, including threats directed at himself, his grandmother, and his young son.
