Barbie Hsu honored with memorial statue
The late Meteor Garden star Barbie Hsu was honored with a memorial statue at her grave.
According to Taiwanese media and news outlet Focus Taiwan, the sculpture was unveiled by Hsu's mother, nicknamed "S Mom," and the actress's husband, Koo Jun-yup, on Feb. 2 at Jinbaoshan Memorial Park in Taiwan.
The ceremony, meant to commemorate Hsu's first death anniversary, was attended by family and celebrities, including F4 members and Meteor Garden co-stars Jerry Yan and Vic Zhou, among others.
On Instagram, artistic director Li Cheng Dao shared a glimpse into how the statue, titled "Eternal Orbit of Hsi-Yuan," was designed by Koo.
The artwork features a statue of Hsu in a dress with her eyes closed and her hands to her heart. Two flowers were placed between her arms.
On the right hand of the statue a flower pattern is etched, similar to the tattoo Hsu had.
Around the figure are nine cubes representing nine planets. The number nine corresponds to "Koo" in Korean. "It is the most cherished number of bustling numbers and an irreplaceable secret language between the two," Li wrote in Chinese, as translated by Instagram.
The statue was erected 208 degrees south, facing Taipei, Hsu's family hometown.
"On this track, time doesn't end anymore, love keeps running," Li said of the statue.
Hsu was best known for her role in the hit 2001 television series Meteor Garden, where she played the spunky and bright-eyed Shancai.
On Feb. 2, 2025, she died of pneumonia at 48 after contracting influenza during a Lunar New Year celebration in Japan.
According to reports, Hsu's assets, estimated at 600 million yuan (P4.7 billion), will be split between Koo, her 10-year-old daughter, and her 8-year-old son. But since her children are still minors, their biological father, Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, will manage their inheritance.
