LOOK: Jessica Soho wears pad paper barong with iconic UP symbols at university graduation
When she's not reporting on crucial issues or uncovering hidden stories, Jessica Soho can be one fashionable woman, and she exemplified this when she wore an eye-catching take on the traditional barong.
The veteran broadcaster recently served as a guest speaker at the 114th General Commencement Exercises of the University of the Philippines Diliman on July 6.
Together with her inspiring message highlighting the importance of service and to keep trying in spite of failure, Soho also had a special outfit for the occasion.
The veteran broadcaster donned designer Daryl Maat's modern interpretation of the barong, which was inspired by a "pad paper" aesthetic.
Maat’s signature design also incorporates playful embroidery details coming in the form of doodles reminiscent of childhood sketches, adding a touch of whimsy to the look.
In Soho's case, the front of her outfit showcases sunflower plants that have been an integral part of the UP graduation for decades, along with UP's logo as well as a sign that holds the university's motto, "Honor. Excellence. Service."
At the back, an image of the UP Administration Building could be seen as well as an airplane flying above with the sign saying, "Kung hindi ngayon, kailan? Kung hindi tayo, sino?"—a battle cry often used by UP students during protests.
"I wanted it to really reflect all things UP," Soho told PhilSTAR L!fe. "From the oblation to the Admin Building, to our famous slogans and battlecries! Of course, the sunflowers had to be there."
This isn't the first time that Soho wore a Maat-designed barong to commemorate an important moment. She also wore one of his designs during GMA's anniversary.
In this version, her outfit's embroidery showed doodles of the old GMA News logo at the front as well as a drawing of what appears to be Soho reporting in front of the camera.
At the back, the iconic "Walang kinikilingan, walang pinoprotektahan, serbisyong totoo lamang" tagline is shown.
Other celebrities who have worn Maat's creations include Eugene Domingo, Marian Rivera, Francine Diaz, and more.
