The cause of death of former child star Evan Ellingson, who passed away at 35, has been revealed.

A spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department told entertainment portal E! News that Evan died of an accidental fentanyl overdose, adding that it’s been ruled an accident.

The movie star was found lifeless in his home early this month.

According to E! News, his family said that he had “long struggled with substance abuse and marked three years of sobriety before a recent relapse.”

“He was passionate about pointing individuals to resources for help and only recently relapsed after being prescribed opioids following a dental procedure,” his relatives said in a statement.

“In the end, he fell in his earthly battle with addiction,” they added.

His family also recalled how the former actor "was always thinking of others and wanted to use his own struggles with addiction to help people find hope."

Evan played the role of Kyle Harmon in CSI: Miami for three years, starring in 18 episodes from 2007 to 2010. He also became known for his Jesse Fitzgerald character in My Sister’s Keeper, where he starred alongside Abigail Breslin, Jason Patric, and Cameron Diaz.

The actor also appeared in TV shows like General Hospital, Titus, That Was Then, Mad TV, Bones, and 24.
