'Star Wars' actors Daisy Ridley, Alden Ehrenreich to lead rom-com set in the Philippines
Updates have emerged regarding The Last Resort, a romantic comedy set in the Philippines.
Directed by Donald Petrie, acclaimed for films such as Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, the film will feature Star Wars stars Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich, placing the Philippines in the spotlight.
According to Deadline, the story follows a woman named Brooke who wants to prove herself worthy of running her father’s hotel empire. She then travels to the Philippines to look for a new resort location and has a fateful meeting with a charming expatriate pilot named Ben.
Through him, Brooke discovers the beauty of the country and realizes a newfound sense of freedom. But as her job collides with her love life, she is faced with the decision of choosing between the life she’s built and the one she’s only just begun to love.
The script was developed by screenwriter and novelist Karen McCullah, who is most known for co-writing comedies such as 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, The Ugly Truth and She's the Man.
McCullah was born in the Philippines during her father's work assignment. She later moved back to the US and grew up in Maryland.
Manny V. Pangilinan of the MVP Group of Companies, which includes The Philippine STAR, will serve as the entertainment offering's executive producer. He will be joined by Ernesto "Bong" Sta. Maria Jr. and Raja Collins.
Ridley rose to prominence for her role as Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, comprised of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. She also appeared in other notable films such as Murder on the Orient Express, Ophelia, and Young Woman and the Sea.
Ehrenreich, meanwhile, played a younger version of Han Solo in his origin film Solo: A Star Wars Story. He is known for his roles in Supernatural, Beautiful Creatures, Cocaine Bear, and Oppenheimer.
Production of The Last Resort will begin in April. Details on other cast members as well as the release date of the film have yet to be revealed.
