Vilma Santos is 'deeply humbled and grateful' for National Artist nomination
Vilma Santos shared her reaction to being formally nominated for the title of National Artist for Film and Broadcast.
In a statement sent to The Philippine STAR, the award-winning actress expressed her appreciation to the League of Filipino Actors (Aktor Ph) for endorsing her as the country's next National Artist.
"I am deeply humbled and sincerely grateful to AKTOR PH, led by Chairman Dingdong Dantes, for its endorsement. Maraming, maraming salamat po to my colleagues in the entertainment industry for this honor," Santos said.
"My heart is full. I hope and pray for the best—that all your efforts will not be futile. Alam naman po natin that there are others who are equally deserving of this award," she added.
The veteran star assured the public that she will continue to promote works and projects in the local entertainment scene.
"Ang mapapangako ko lamang po ay ang aking walang sawang pagsuporta sa ikauunlad ng ating sining at ng buong Philippine entertainment industry. Mabuhay po tayong lahat at mula sa puso... maraming salamat pong muli!" she highlighted.
During a press conference attended by reporters, Dantes said that Santos' name is "synonymous with versatility, excellence, and unparalleled craftsmanship in Philippine cinema."
"For 60 years, anim na dekada, Vilma has graced the silver screen with an incomparable body of work. Portraying a diverse array of characters showcased her immense talent," he said.
But more than being an actress, Dantes underscored that Santos also serves as a "symbol of empowerment and resilience embodying the strength and spirit of Filipino women."
"Naniniwala po kami that Vilma Santos has contributed significantly to the Development of Filipino cultural impact and identity," he said.
"So today, we would like to honor her as a paragon of professionalism we would like to honor her as a protector of a community, we honor her as a cultural champion and more importantly, we also honor her as a nation builder," he continued.
If Santos gets named National Artist in her category, she will join the likes of Lino Brocka, Eddie S. Romero, Fernando Poe Jr., Nora Aunor, Ricky Lee, and more.
The deadline for nominations for National Artists is on June 30.
