Sam said he's wishing he got himself checked when he was still prediabetic, when one has a "higher than normal blood sugar level" but "not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes yet," according to health website Mayo Clinic.

He also advised not to ignore any symptoms as he shared the warning signs he experienced, which included excessive thirst and frequent urination. "Get checked up regularly," he added.

The National Health Service refers to Type 2 diabetes as a "common condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high." Aside from getting thirsty easily and needing to pee often, other symptoms include feeling more tired than usual, losing weight, and having blurry vision. It's possible for some patients to have no symptoms.

Diabetes can increase one's risk of "getting serious problems with their eyes, feet, heart, and nerves," per the NHS.

According to Cleveland Clinic, it can be caused by genetics, physical inactivity, bad eating habits, hormonal disorders, and chronic stress, among others.

The health website said it can be managed through lifestyle changes such as exercise and eating adjustments as well as blood sugar monitoring and medication.
