A former American Idol contestant has been charged with murder and staging a crime scene in connection with the death of his wife.

According to reports by NBC News and FOX News, Caleb Flynn, 39, has been charged with murder, two counts each of felonious assault and tampering with evidence, after his wife, Ashley, was found dead in their home in Tipp City, Ohio, on Feb. 16.

Court documents reveal that the authorities believe Caleb murdered his wife with a 9mm handgun and staged the crime scene to misdirect the police.

Detailing the incident, Caleb called 911 and told the dispatcher that someone had broken into their house and shot his wife twice in the head.

"Oh my god, somebody broke into my home, somebody broke into my home and shot my wife," Caleb said, as heard in the audio obtained by the outlets. "My wife, she's got two shots to her head, there's blood everywhere. Oh my god, oh my god, oh my God," he added. Their two children were also at home during the incident but were uninjured.

When asked if Ashley was breathing, Caleb responded, "No, I don't think so." He also claimed that the door "leading to the garage door" was "wide open" at the time.

Caleb was arraigned in court on Feb. 20 and entered a not guilty plea. He remains in custody after failing to post the $2 million (~P115.9 million) cash bond, according to court and jail records.

He was a contestant on American Idol in 2013, where he introduced himself as a "music pastor" who "loves to sing more than anything in the world."

"I love my wife more than anything, she is very very pretty, just oof, I love her," he said in an interview on the show.

His wife, Ashley, was a volleyball coach and a substitute teacher. She was described as a dedicated teacher known for her “beautiful smile, warmth, kindness, and the positive impact she had on so many.”
