Nicki Minaj releases trailer for her six-part docu series 'Nicki'
One of the most recognizable voices in the music industry is Trinidadian-born pop star Nicki Minaj. Often cited as the "Queen of Rap" by various media outlets, she has built a successful singing career over the years, and now she's ready to tell the world about her journey in her upcoming documentary series.
On July 29, Minaj shared the trailer for her six-part documentary series Nicki, which would delve deep into the challenges she faced while she was building a career as one of the few female rappers in the mainstream music industry.
"Coming out SOONER THANK YOU THINK. I took some time to perfect this very intimate, delicate, electrifying, inspiring body of work. As I decide on a home for this project, I can’t help but reflect on what I’m including in this doc. Some things are so personal, it’s scary. It’s like NOTHING you’ve seen before & I need it to be handled with care. Love you so much. Thank you for the continued support," she captioned on her Instagram.
The two-minute trailer showed various scenes of Minaj performing in concerts and belting out her famous songs. It opened with Nicki saying how no one taught her how to be a successful rapper and that she just learned how to be one along the way.
"I think the woman back then, she wasn't afraid to fail. Female rappers back then weren't really charting at the time. I’m fighting for the girls who never thought they could win," Minaj said.
"I never wanted to be mainstream. Mainstream came to me," the 39-year-old rapper explained.
While Minaj said that she values the art form of rapping, she still doesn't get the same respect as male rappers.
"I take the art form of rap very seriously. I simply just don't get the respect that men do. You constantly feel like you're doing something wrong and you just stop doing, period. This industry is just not a loving, supportive place they pretend sometimes," she said.
She added, "When you are just focused on the business, you can lose yourself. It was time for me to grow up and start loving myself. I became the strongest I've ever been in my life and then I just started rapping."
As per Minaj's Instagram caption, Canadian company BRON Studios is still deciding where to air the documentary project.
