Lizzo 'quits' after getting tired of 'being dragged' online
About Damn Time singer Lizzo has said she's "quitting" as she has grown tired of "being dragged" by people in her life and online.
The Grammy and Emmy award-winning artist took to Instagram to air her grievances but did not specify if she was leaving social media or the entertainment industry.
"I'm getting tired of putting up with and being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet," she wrote. "All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it."
"But I'm starting to feel like the world doesn't want me in it. I'm constantly up against lies being told about me for clout [and] views... being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look... My character being picked apart by people who don't know me and disrespecting my name. I didn't sign up for this s**t—I QUIT."
Some stars rallied in support of Lizzo. Comedian Loni Love wrote, "Girl don't let them win... stay off the internet.. hug up [your] man... keep working."
"We love you Queen," Paris Hilton commented.
"The [people] need [you,] Lizzo. I remember [you] made me keep going when I wanted to quit before. [Your] soul is so pure," American rapper Latto said.
Lizzo's statement comes after US president Joe Biden was criticized for inviting the Truth Hurts singer to headline a fundraiser in New York City. Her involvement drew flak as the award-winning artist has an ongoing harassment lawsuit against her.
In August 2023, three former backup dancers accused Lizzo of creating a hostile work environment with sexual, religious and racial harassment, disability discrimination, assault, false imprisonment, and weight-shaming. A clothing designer who worked on the singer's Special tour also sued Lizzo and her management in September of that year.
The artist has denied these allegations and requested the court to dismiss the lawsuit but this was rejected in February 2024.
