Hunter Schafer reveals she underwent gender-affirming bottom surgery last year
Hunter Schafer revealed she underwent gender-affirming bottom surgery last year.
In her interview with ELLE, the Euphoria star opened up about undergoing a procedure last December.
“I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much," she said.
Bottom surgery is a gender-affirming procedure that alters a person’s reproductive organs to better align with their gender identity.
The 27-year-old actress reflects on her journey toward self-acceptance and the decision to medically transition, explaining, “For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it.”
However, Schafer repeatedly encountered a "wall" where the ideal of a "queer utopia" clashed with the reality of her daily life and her personal desires for self-expression.
She shared that during her recovery, she rented a large apartment where friends and family could visit her while she was required to remain lying down.
“I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing,” she explains.
Schafer began transitioning at 14 and has been open about her journey ever since. According to ELLE, Schafer, then 17, was the youngest plaintiff involved in the legal challenge against North Carolina’s controversial anti-transgender “bathroom bill,” which sought to restrict transgender people’s access to public restrooms based on their gender identity.
In 2025, she spoke up against US President Donald Trump's administration as she revealed that her passport now lists her gender as male following an executive order declaring that the government will only recognize two sexes: male and female. This affected official documents such as passports, visas, and Global Entry cards.
Other than Euphoria, Schafer played roles in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Blade Runner 2099, and Cuckoo.
