‘Aquamarine’ TV series in the works at Disney+ with Emma Roberts, Jake McDorman set to return
Is it just us or is every 90s to 2000s chick flicks getting a revival? But either way, we love it! The latest fan-favorite set for a reboot is Aquamarine, which is headed to television very soon.
People Magazine reported that Disney has officially confirmed that the 2006 film is in development as a TV series. Original star Emma Roberts is set to make a guest appearance and reprise her role as Claire Brown, while Jake McDorman will return as Raymond, Aquamarine’s romantic interest, as a series regular.
In the TV reboot, Raymond is a devoted single father to his daughter with Aquamarine, Coral, who will be portrayed by Vampirina: Teenage Vampire star Kenzi Richardson.
According to the official logline, the Aquamarine reboot centers on Coral, a young girl who moves to “a dreamy seaside town” and begins uncovering the mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance. She soon discovers that her mother, Aquamarine, was a mermaid, awakening magical powers within Coral as long-hidden secrets beneath the waves begin to surface.
Coral is described as “a creative and introspective teenager” who learns that she is half mermaid and must navigate the challenges of adolescence and self-discovery while coming to terms with the absence of the mother she never had the chance to know.
The series will also explore Raymond’s journey as he struggles to come to terms with Coral’s growing independence while continuing to grieve the loss of Aquamarine.
Other cast members include Briella Guiza, Theodore Dalton, and Annika Reese.
Original Aquamarine director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum is returning to direct the Disney+ reboot. She will also executive produce the series alongside Roberts, McDorman, and original producer Susan Cartsonis.
More details, including the Disney+ series’ release date, have yet to be announced. It is also unclear whether original stars Joanna “JoJo” Levesque or Sara Paxton, who played Aquamarine in the 2006 film, will appear in the series.
The 2006 film tackled the story of best friends Claire and Hailey, who discover a mermaid named Aquamarine after she washes ashore. The girls help Aquamarine find true love so she can avoid an arranged marriage, bringing them together for an unforgettable summer of friendship, romance and adventure.
