'Moana 3' is in the works, says Dwayne Johnson
Moana will sail the seas again soon, as Dwayne Johnson confirmed that a third movie is underway.
According to a report by Variety, Johnson, who voices demigod Maui, hinted that a third Moana film is already in the works.
“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes,” Johnson said at a recent press conference for the live-action film adaptation, adding that the film's original writers will helm the next film.
“But first, live-action Moana, we’ll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers...they will pen ‘Moana 3.’”
Released in 2016, Moana follows the adventurous journey of the title character and the demigod Maui as they sail across the ocean to restore the heart of the goddess Te Fiti and save her island. The film stars Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho, alongside Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jemaine Clement.
Its soundtrack, composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa'i, features fan favorites including How Far I'll Go, You're Welcome, and Shiny.
The original movie earned $680 million (around P38.5 billion) at the global box office when it was released in 2016. It later became one of the most-watched titles on Disney+, per Variety.
Moana 2, initially meant to be released on Disney+ streaming as a series, was released in 2024 as a film and garnered $1 billion (P61 billion) gross worldwide.
The live-action version stars Johnson and Catherine Laga'aia, who plays Moana, and it will be released this July.
