The Gundam franchise is getting a major upgrade. Netflix has announced the cast set to bring the iconic mecha saga to life.

According to a news release, the live-action film adaptation will be led by Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo and will see a "brand-new story set in the midst of a lengthy space war."

Starring alongside them are Jackson White (Tell Me Lies), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), Nonso Anozie (Sweet Tooth), Michael Mando (Better Call Saul), Javon “Wanna” Walton (Under the Bridge), and Oleksandr Rudynskyi (The Agency).

Completing the cast are Ida Brooke (Dune: Part Three), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High), and Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus).

Directed by Jim Mickle, the adaptation centers on rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its space former colonies.

"As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before," the synopsis of the film reads.

According to Netflix, the film has now begun production in Queensland, Australia.

The Gundam franchise was created by Japanese anime director Yoshiyuki Tomino and puts the spotlight on giant robots known as "Mobile Suits," which are typically piloted by humans.

It was first introduced in 1979 through the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam, and it has since grown into one of Japan’s most influential and enduring sci-fi properties, spawning multiple series, films, video games, and merchandise worldwide.

Netflix has yet to give details on the adaptation's release date.
