Jewelry with boho chic and hippie vibe in 2025
As maximalism insinuated itself into a year of quiet luxury, jewelry has also switched to high gear, with more color, boldness and frills through colored gemstones, statement pieces and tassels. The arm comes stacked, from bold cuffs to piled-on bangles. In the race for embellishment, brooches are winners, too, and boho chic brings beads galore, the larger the better and while we’re at it, keep on layering them around the neck together with chains.
The hippie vibe is a relaxed aesthetic, of course, with nature dominating: fish, shells, pearls and corals from the sea to birds in the sky. Even diamonds go more chill through sportier designs. For even more serenity, graphic lines provide a certain purity and sense of calm.
Statements
If the recent Golden Globes was any indication, statement jewelry was the way to make a fabulous entrance. Leading the pack was Anya Taylor-Joy in her stunning Tiffany Star Burst necklace of opals and diamonds. The season’s runways were brimming with attention-grabbing, handcrafted pieces, many of which brought to mind what our local designers and artisans like Adante Leyesa do so well in their own versions.
Color
More color has been seen on the runways, where even Baroque pearls have turned into Bottega Veneta’s signature green, and molten earrings at Saint Laurent were ablaze with ruby and emerald stones. Our local jewelry designers have always been at home with colored gemstones, mixing them together in delightful concoctions.
Tassels
Flapper fringes in fashion have their jewelry moment as ornamentation comes alive with tassels, as seen in Chloe’s earrings and Balmain’s necklaces. Natalya Lagdameo’s Philippine colonial Tamburin earrings have gold chain dangles while those of Hans Brumann, Kristine Dee and Jul B Dizon are in colored gemstones.
Stacked
Nothing is spared, from the wrist to the upper arm as you pile on the cuffs, bangles, and arm bands. Emporio Armani does chunky industrial gunmetal while Gucci’s is more delicate with its bent-bamboo motif in gold and rosso enamel. Local designer Arnel Papa’s handcrafted gilded cuffs always punctuate an outfit while Erica Concepcion Reyes’ vintage gold bracelets add that final touch to an elegant ensemble.
Brooches
At the Globes, men stole the show with their brooches on lapels: Kieran Culkin wearing Tiffany’s iconic Bird on a Rock, and Adrien Brody sporting Elsa Jin’s Mozi piece. Although social media has been obsessed lately with vintage brooches to personalize jackets, Philippine jewelers have actually been crafting fine pieces for decades and continue to update their designs.
Beads
With bohemian dressing back, beads are a big thing, as seen at Ralph Lauren where soft tailoring is enhanced with necklaces swung long and low, and at Saint Laurent’s maxi looks complemented by supersized versions. Joyce Makitalo has them in gigantic jade gumballs which she layers with pearls and chain necklaces while Adante Leyesa does vibrant colors mixed with charms and found objets.
Layered
With the comeback of maximalism, how could you stop yourself from piling on those necklaces? Paul Syjuco layers his pearl necklaces with cameo pendants while Virtucio does it with chains.
The sea
Sea motifs bring that relaxing vibe, from sea creatures at Tory Burch and mermaids at Etro to Candy Dizon’s swimming goldfish brooch. Shells and Corals are favorite motifs of Philippine designers and studios like Janina Dizon and her carved coral and diamond pieces and Josmundo’s shell fantasies.
Birds
Birds are also a favorite theme of designers, taking flight at Chanel in páve and chains, and coming in gilded pairs at Stella McCartney. Paul Syjuco’s opal and diamond pendant pays tribute to an oriole that regularly visits his garden.
Pearls
The runways were brimming with more pearls than usual with some really wild designs, in earrings of long, dangling branches at Ralph Lauren and in cascades of cuffs at Dior.
Baroque pearls continue to fascinate the fashion crowd and our local versions are up to speed: Arao’s necklaces combining different shades are unisex and chic and their earrings beautifully match gray pearls with yellow sapphires.
Diamonds
Diamonds are traditionally reserved for the fanciest pieces but designers are now making them sportier from Bulgari’s B.zero1 ring to Cartier’s 2025 edition of the Trinity with three animal prints. A younger, more casual vibe also runs through pieces by Paul Syjuco and JMA
Jewelry.
Line
The purity of a line brings a serene elegance to gold colliers at Hermès and Gucci, and cuffs at Alexander McQueen. Kristine Dee’s diamond pavé necklace and Paul Syjuco’s modernist rings with diamond solitaires are perfect complements to the looks of the season.
