The stars go all out at Oscars 2025

Published Mar 07, 2025 11:26 am

The wildfires that ravaged parts of Hollywood’s home city of Los Angeles threatened to cast a shadow on the film industry’s biggest night and in fact led to the cancellation of some parties, but the 97th Academy Awards—or the Oscars—pushed through nevertheless, giving it a sense of urgency that was highlighted with a tribute to the city of dreams that has been a beacon for filmmakers and creative visionaries for over a century.

The crisis did not dim the glitter on the red carpet, either, as stars went all out in their couture best with jewels to match. Some, of course, went over-the-top, making their “out” downright outré. The taste levels may have been questionable but no one’s complaining since it made the evening more exciting and entertaining for fashion watchers who have become jaded with the usual mermaid gown clones.

One thing for sure, designer ateliers went all out with millions of Swarovski crystals, sequins, pearls, and embroideries, not to mention thousands of artisanal manhours consumed to create the gowns that dazzled at the red carpet.

Ariana Grande’s Schiaparelli gown alone had 190,000 crystal sequins, rhinestones, and cut beads to give her tulle skirt an iridescent shimmer beneath the sculptural squiggly peplum of her pink satin bustier. Grande’s Wicked costar, Cynthia Erivo, had a face-framing “Ming the Merciless” collar for her Louis Vuitton fairy tale ensemble in dark green, in keeping with her Elphaba color to Grande’s Glinda pink.

Metallic always makes a statement which the Pinoy contingent opted for: Filipino-American singer H.E.R. who sang the Oscar nominated song The Journey in the war drama The Six Triple Eight was dressed by Ralph Lauren in a hand-embellished lamé gown with distressed leather belt, a look that she said made her “feel like a queen.” The influencer Bretman Rock, on his first Oscars, went bronze in Robert Wun’s signature sunray pleats.

Halle Berry was a walking ball of confusion with shattered mirror appliques by Christian Siriano.

Nude was also in, channeling Old Hollywood glamour, as seen on Emma Stone’s slinky scaled dress by Louis Vuitton and Selena Gomez’ Ralph Lauren couture made by 12 artisans, consisting of 16,000 glass droplets.

Lingerie elements made things a little more risqué: Monica Barbaro, the A Complete Unknown star had a beaded bra top for her voluminous satin Dior ball gown while Lupita Nyo’Ngo had a chainmail bodice over a pearl-embellished bustier from Chanel that required 22,000 elements of embroideries.

Scarves added drama, like the way it nonchalantly swept from the neck to the back in Doja Cat’s Balmain leopard gown micro-beaded by 46 artisans for 5,600 hours. It also punctuated menswear, coming in lavender underneath Jeff Goldblum’s Prada tux and dotted and tasseled in the Valentino suit of Omar Apollo who wore a netted veil to boot.

For some coquetry, designers employed the bow, demure in the pink satin Dior of Anora’s Mikey Madison and the ivory lace Givenchy of Elle Fanning. It was a little bolder in the severe Loewe gown of Raffey Cassidy.

The classic tux went sunny yellow with a trucker vibe in the Givenchy of Timotheé Chalamet and more Baroque in leather by Etro for Bowen Yang. For BLACKPINK's Lisa, Markgong made the jacket floor-sweeping. Andrew Garfield was groovy in an espresso Gucci while Colman Domingo did Valentino red.
