Want to take up running?

Published Jun 17, 2025 5:00 am

A survey conducted by SportsShoes.com revealed that 62% of millennials run at least once a week. A significant portion of Generation Active (comprising millennials and Gen Z) is increasingly participating in marathons.

Running’s appeal is due to its accessibility (it’s easy to start), affordability (no expensive equipment needed), and versatility (in terms of venue and schedule). The benefits also extend beyond the physical, having a positive impact on one’s mental health. There is also the social aspect of being part of a running group or a community.

Thinking of taking up the sport? We asked runners some questions to inspire and educate you.

PHILIPPINE STAR: When did you start running? What did you wish you knew about running and health when you first started?

2021 Miss Aura International Faith Garcia said running helped her a lot not only physically but also mentally and emotionally.

FAITH GARCIA (Miss Aura International 2021): I started running in 2014. Looking back, I wish I had known sooner that you didn’t need to be an elite athlete to start running—or to start any sport. I used to think you had to be extremely athletic even to try, but the truth is, anyone can start, even just occasionally or as a hobby. When I was a kid, I wasn’t particularly athletic, aside from swimming, and I never really enjoyed running. Now, I wish I had discovered the sport earlier because it has helped me so much, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.

ANTHONY IBALAN (consultant, McDonald’s Philippines): Started running way back in 2021. During that time, I was already 41 years old, and I wish I knew back then that I could still push myself to the limit of what I thought I could no longer do. My passion for running began when my sister died of cancer. I was a heavy smoker before and wanted to quit. From there, I decided to adopt a healthy lifestyle, so I started running. After work, I usually run four times a week. Sometimes, I join road or trail running events. This really helped me a lot physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and has led to a better and healthier life.

Anthony Ibalan, operations consultant of McDonald’s Philippines, admits that his passion for running started when his sister died of cancer.

ELROY ILAGAN (Globe Telecom senior manager): I started running in 2010, and if I could go back, I would tell myself to prioritize recovery and strength training much earlier. Like many beginners, I initially focused on increasing mileage without considering the long-term impact on my body. Over the years, I’ve learned that structured rest, mobility work, and proper fueling are just as crucial as the training itself.

JP ENANO (2024 Duathlete of the Year in the Male 25-29 Age Group): I focused only on running and neglected what I ate. Fueling properly has made a huge difference in my performance and recovery. I started running in 2018. Before that, I used to drink alcohol and smoke, until I met someone who encouraged me to start running; he eventually became my friend and also a coach now, Ray Felismino. At first, running was just a hobby for us. Until I joined a duathlon event which was held in Sorsogon. Out of all the participants, I managed to finish in the top 10. That’s when I told myself that I might have potential. With the help of my friend, I began training seriously, and that’s how my journey in the sport continued.

GAS assistant coach JP Enano, the 2024 Duathlete of the Year in the Male 25-29 Age Group, attests that ‘‘fueling properly has made a huge difference in my performance and recovery.”

Favorite running route or race?

FAITH: Locally, I’d say Subic is my favorite running route. It’s where I grew up, and most of the races are held in the area. It’s easy and convenient to train there, especially when I’m in Olongapo. The roads are safe, and it’s a great environment for swim-bike-run. Plus, it’s not too expensive if you want to do a tri-camp or stay for an extended training block.

For international races, maybe I’d say the most recent one I joined—the Hong Kong Marathon—is a standout. It was incredibly challenging, especially towards the end with its rolling hills. I didn’t expect it to be that tough, and I was really aiming to beat my personal best. While I did manage a PB, I fell short of my target time because the last 5 kilometers were brutal. Still, I’d love to go back and race there again. It’s one of my favorites so far because I genuinely love tough courses—and that one truly tested me.

ANTHONY: My favorite race so far is TBR (The Bull Runner Dream Marathon is the first and only marathon in the world that caters to first- or second-time marathoners). This was my first and unforgettable marathon.

ELROY: Sydney Marathon holds a special place for me. This year will be my third time running it, and it's particularly exciting since Sydney has officially become part of the World Marathon Majors. The course is spectacular, passing iconic landmarks, and the energy from the crowd makes it an unforgettable experience.

Elroy Ilagan, a senior manager at Globe Telecom, wished he prioritized recovery and strength training when he was starting.

JP: My favorite race, and one of the most unforgettable moments in my running journey, was the Clark City Marathon. Because It was my first full marathon, and I also finished in first place.

Must-have piece of running gear? Why?

FAITH: Definitely my running shoes—specifically, shoes with a flat profile. I’ve noticed I can control my pace much better with flat running shoes. They keep me grounded and give me a better feel for the road, especially during long runs or races.

ANTHONY: Shoes. This is crucial running gear that has a significant impact on your performance.

ELROY: Hydration is absolutely essential, especially when running in warmer conditions. A hydration bottle is my go-to, as it ensures I stay properly fueled throughout training and races.

JP: For me, a good pair of running shoes is an absolute must-have because they are specifically designed to offer the right balance of support, cushioning, stability, and shock absorption, which not only enhances running performance but also significantly reduces the risk of injuries and ensures a more comfortable and efficient running experience over various distances and terrains.
