Selena Gomez: ‘I want someone to love me like I’m brand-new’

Selena Gomez’s career on TV and in music brought her massive success, but success and fame also made it difficult for her to trust people.

“I can’t meet someone and know if they like me for me,” the singer shares with Vogue in its April cover story.

“To be honest, I just want to start over. I want everything to be brand-new. I want someone to love me like I’m brand-new,” said Gomez, whose new Spanish-language EP Revelacion is set to come out this week.

Gomez also brushed on the time when everything around her was whirring—international tour for her first solo album, dodging paparazzi, and getting in a serious relationship with a “teen heartthrob,” which, as many know, is singer Justin Bieber.

Gomez and Bieber’s on-again, off-again relationship began in 2011 and eventually ended in 2018. A few months after their split, Bieber wed model Hailey Baldwin.

The Lose You to Love Me singer shared with Vogue that she had prolonged stays at treatment centers, first in 2016 and another in 2018, which fans speculate was because of her split with Bieber.

“I know I couldn’t go on unless I learned to listen to my body and mind when I really needed help,” she says. “And then I start thinking about my personal life, and I’m like, ‘What am I doing with my life?’ and it becomes this spiral.”

Gomez recently spoke about her bipolar disorder diagnosis, and how  therapy and support from friends has helped her overcome her struggles.

In the Vogue interview, Gomez also hinted on wanting to retire from making music and said she wanted to give a shot at acting.

"It's hard to keep doing music when people don't necessarily take you seriously," she told the magazine.

She added, "I've had moments where I've been like, 'What's the point? Why do I keep doing this?' 'Lose You to Love Me' I felt was the best song I've ever released, and for some people, it still wasn't enough."

The hitmaker said she wants to "give it one last try" before maybe retiring from music.

"I think there are a lot of people who enjoy my music, and for that I'm so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it'll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music," she said. —With a report from ANI
