Navigating the network: A Filipina tech leader’s journey in a connected world
Despite technology still being seen as a “man’s world,” women in the field continue to innovate and drive transformation, expertly navigating the complex networks that underpin our modern world. Standing toe-to-toe with their male counterparts, they help shape a future in tech defined by algorithms, data, and the efficient flow of information across interconnected systems.
A career in computer engineering did not seem daunting for Vanessa Maria Dolores Bueno, vice president and head of BDO Unibank’s Network Services. Her journey into technology began with a deliberate decision to pursue a highly specialized path, one that placed her at the forefront of managing and understanding the intricacies of digital networks.
With the right digital tools, technological advancements, and networks that helped solidify her resolve, Bueno worked her way up the tech ladder. She leveraged her knowledge and skills in technology to innovate and implement change within her organization.

Wired for success
Bueno jump-started her career by taking up computer engineering and upskilling through a computer technician course. In college, she learned how to maneuver and work her way around computers—a skill set that opened the door to her first job. She worked at a shipping corporation, where she first recognized the importance of network foundations for businesses and enterprises to stay connected and scale their operations. This experience helped her understand the critical need to reinforce these networks effectively.
“Working at a shipping corporation really laid out the importance of network foundations for me. In any company, enterprise, or industry, staying connected is crucial since businesses rely heavily on connectivity to operate,” she shared.
Having worked her first job as a network engineer, Bueno made the bold decision to transition to telecommunications companies, believing that telcos form the backbone of modern connectivity and offer the expertise needed to navigate the broader network ecosystem.
She expanded her skills in network infrastructure through more than a decade of experience with these companies, ultimately proving that she was capable of driving digital and network transformation in yet another industry—banking.

“When an opportunity to work at BDO arose, I welcomed it. I realized the powerful synergy I could create by combining my knowledge of network transformation with my deep understanding of banking network infrastructure. With my transfer to BDO, I was able to support the bank’s digital journey because of their investments in network transformation,” Bueno said.
As the head of BDO’s Network Services, Bueno believes that finding the right digital partner, combined with her experience as a woman in tech, helped her discover advanced network solutions.
This underscores the importance of a strong ecosystem of connectivity providers in the Philippines. Companies like Globe are integral to this, offering seamless, right-sized solutions, robust network support systems, and the reliable connectivity necessary for organizations to navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Diverse voices navigating together
For women leaders like Bueno, true digital transformation hinges on bridging connectivity gaps and ensuring equal opportunities. The increasing presence of women in tech, particularly in areas like network infrastructure, brings diverse and invaluable perspectives that are critical to shaping an inclusive digital future.
Bueno also emphasized that women in tech who are driven by their passion and purpose are more likely to thrive through continuous growth and capability-building. Many demonstrate collaborative leadership styles and strong communication skills, fostering teamwork, knowledge-sharing, and a culture that embraces inclusivity and diverse viewpoints. Their success demonstrates that skillful navigation of the digital landscape is not limited by gender, but fueled by talent and determination.
“Our country has more room for growth in technology than ever before. The exciting part is, we, as women in tech—with our approach to working together and sharing diverse, valuable insights—can rise to meet the present and future challenges if we are driven by passion and purpose in what we do,” she added.

“With partners like Globe Business, we can create diverse opportunities for more women in the tech space to thrive. Then, we can navigate the uncharted future of technology together.”
In this ongoing journey of navigating the future of technology, the reliable infrastructure and network solutions provided by Globe Business serve as essential enablers.
