Who runs the world?

In terms of workout accountability, some people have gym buddies, while others keep a fitness journal. Me? I decided to try something different: I registered for a fun run.

The beauty of starting with running is it's budget-friendly—all you really need is a good pair of rubber shoes and off you go. But, let's be real, aimlessly running can get pretty dull. So when I came across the Avon Fun Run to Boob Love, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to take running seriously.

The Avon Fun Run to Boob Love is a fundraising event for breast health advocacy. The goal was to raise funds for the Philippine Cancer Society and drive initiatives that empower women with knowledge about breast cancer's warning signs, risks, and available treatment options.

My dad and I decided to sign up for the 3K run, a humble start to being a runner girlie. So, on a rainy morning in late October, we headed to the CCP Complex.

As we arrived, we noticed that most participants, dressed in the Barbie pink event singlets, were huddled under tents, seeking shelter from the rain. At that point, I was a bit hesitant about whether this was a good idea.

But what surprised me more was the enthusiasm in the air as the gun start time neared. Despite the rain, everyone seemed incredibly eager to hit the track. From a bunch of cheerful old ladies to a lively squad of young students, their high spirits remained unshaken, as if nothing could rain on their parade.

Before both the 3K and 5K runs, a quick Zumba exercise kicked things off to warm up our muscles. Actor Enchong Dee delivered some motivating words that pumped up our energy. He also ran alongside us for the 3K.

Together, we help create a better world for women, a world where women no longer have to live in fear of breast cancer.

The run itself was an exhilarating and empowering experience. I had been preparing for this event for about a month, and crossing that finish line filled me with an immense sense of pride, even if it was just three kilometers.

With my headphones and raincoat on, I powered through marshals hyping up the runners, seniors taking shortcuts, and Enchong Dee just effortlessly breezing past me while I caught my breath.

When the final marshal shouted, “Konti na lang! Good job!” I felt like I was about to cry as I passed the finish line and received my finisher’s medal.

Being surrounded by fellow finishers and their loved ones made me feel like we all achieved something truly meaningful together. And actually, that feeling isn’t just an idea. It’s also a tangible accomplishment.

Standing in solidarity with individuals affected by breast cancer, Avon has contributed a portion of the event proceeds to support the life-saving work of the Philippine Cancer Society.

Razvan Diratian, Avon Philippines' general manager, was delighted to see people unite for a cause close to Avon's heart. He remarked, "Together, we help create a better world for women, a world where women no longer have to live in fear of breast cancer."

To build up on everyone’s post-run energy, the Avon race village set off in full swing. At the Avon Intimate Apparel booth, runners engaged in games designed to match their breast shapes with the brand's intimates. Guidance on regular breast self-examinations, along with additional information on breast health and care, were also available.

Esteemed women like Pia Wurtzbach, Michelle Dee, and Kyline Alcantara also graced the event, demonstrating their support for #BoobLove. They vow to ensure the widespread awareness of breast health risks, signs and necessary action, as early detection and treatment can significantly improve the likelihood of survival.

2023 Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee believes breast health education should commence in the classroom. "The sooner we normalize these discussions and help women feel comfortable with these topics, the quicker we'll be in a better place.”

However, initiating these conversations can often feel quite challenging. Discussing the health of your private areas isn't the most natural icebreaker with family and friends.

For young women seeking a proactive approach to their health, 2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach offers some valuable advice. “If you're a bit more conservative and shy, you can do a self-checkup. Know that many women share the same feelings. Kung nahihiya ka, bring along someone you trust, para meron kang sounding board and pinaghuhugutan ng confidence.”

As the sky cleared and the sun peaked through, my confidence was uplifted talking to these empowering queens. Taking care of your health shouldn't be left on the back burner, no matter your age. So, whether it’s checking your breasts for lumps or signing up for a fun run, we must love and nurture the body that we have.
