UP Open University offers microcredential courses, each running for only a month

Time to upskill: The UP Open University has added new microcredential courses to its offerings.

Taught by industry experts, a UPOU microcredential indicates a person's skills in a niche subject. The one-time learning experience for the courses is focused on specific aspects of a particular topic. Each short course trains a learner to help them advance in their profession, while offering their employer, or future employers, a reliable indication of the learner's skills.

UPOU has opened enrollment for five microcredential courses focused on the semiconductor industry.

The university suggests learners first take the two foundational courses—Semiconductor Materials Physics and Industrial Electronics—before going on to the more specialized courses, which are Introduction to Semiconductor Manufacturing, AI and Smart Manufacturing, and Global Career Entrepreneurship & Cross-Cultural Communication. However, you can take the courses in any order, or you may choose to take just what you believe you need.

All the courses are fully online and asynchronous. This means you can learn at your own pace without needing to attend in-person sessions. If you follow the course schedule, however, you can complete one course in four weeks.

Each course has a registration fee of P1,850 for Filipino students and $168 for foreign students. Once learners complete the course, UPOU requires them to apply for an assessment, which involves paying an assessment fee and then taking the assessment set by UPOU.

After completion, learners will be sent a certificate and a digital badge.

According to UPOU, the university conceptualized microcredentials after determining employers' general preference for specific skills and competencies over general degrees. Microcredentials also provide learners with "fast and flexible solutions" for industry-aligned upskilling and reskilling. These are ideal for employees gunning for career advancements.
