Woman receives reply to job application 48 years later

During job interviews, prospective employers would often tell applicants that they'd get an update in a week or two—only for that update to never happen.

But for a job hunter in the late '70s, it was apparently a better-late-than-never situation as she finally got a reply. After 48 years, that is.

BBC reported that Tizi Hodson, a 70-year-old who resides in Lincolnshire county, sent her application as a motorcycle stunt rider via mail in January 1976.

Her application was left unanswered in the coming years. As it turned out, it had been stuck behind a post office drawer.

Hodson's application letter was sent back to her with a handwritten note that read, “Late delivery by Staines Post Office. Found behind a draw [sic]. Only about 50 years late.”

"I always wondered why I never heard back about the job. Now I know why," Hodson said, adding that the letter being returned was "amazing."

She didn't know who returned the letter and how it was returned.

“How they found me when I’ve moved house 50-odd times, and even moved countries four or five times, is a mystery,” she said.

Hodson recalled "very clearly" sitting in her former apartment in London typing the letter.

"Every day I looked for my post but there was nothing there," she said. "I was so disappointed because I really, really, wanted to be a stunt rider on a motorcycle.”

With the radio silence, Hodson started looking for other jobs.

She moved to Africa and became a snake handler and horse whisperer. Later on, she learned to fly and became an aerobatic pilot and flying instructor.

Looking back, Hodson said she was "very careful" not to let people know she was a female applying for a stunt rider, thinking she won't have the chance to land an interview.

"I even stupidly told them I didn’t mind how many bones I might break as I was used to it," she recalled.

Hodson said it's "incredible" to get the letter back after all this time.

“If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to go and do everything I’ve done," she said. "I’ve had such a wonderful time in life, even if I have broken a few bones.”
