Pokémon fans! Get ready to experience a brand new take on the beloved video game franchise.

This time, The Pokémon Company introduces Pokémon to the MOBA genre with Pokémon UNITE launching on Nintendo Switch in July and on mobile this September.

In simpler terms, League of Legends but make it Pokémon.

The new video game recently released a trailer featuring an action-packed dramatization of the gameplay with popular Pokémon like Pikachu, Snorlax, and Mr. Mime. It also showed lesser-known Pokémon such as Cramorant with a Pikachu in its mouth and a poor adorable Fletchling getting beaten up.

A bit of actual gameplay footage was also shown in the trailer, showcasing the strategic team battle MOBA players would be familiar with.

Developed by The Pokémon Company and Tencent Games’ TiMi Studios, Pokémon UNITE was announced last year as a 5v5 strategy battle, where players will cooperate with teammates to catch wild Pokémon, level up and evolve their own Pokémon, and defeating the opposing team’s Pokémon while trying to earn more points within the allotted time in an arena.

As the Pokémon game franchise has traditionally always been for solo-players, the strategic teamwork aspect is a breath of fresh air, besides that, the usual familiar Pokémon charm, catching and levelling up, is still present.

Pokémon UNITE is free to play at first on Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.

For fans who aren’t into the MOBA genre, the Pokémon universe still has much to offer. In November this year, the classic Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is coming to the Nintendo Switch, while the long-awaited open-world Pokémon game Pokémon Legends: Arceus is expected for a January 2022 release.
