Woman dismembers mother with chainsaw, grills remains

A woman was found guilty of murder after dismembering her own mother with a chainsaw, seasoning her body parts, and putting them on the grill.

The Washington Post reported on Friday, Nov. 1 that Candace Craig of Maryland was found guilty of first- and second-degree murder and lesser charges in the death of 71-year-old Margaret Craig.

Prosecutors said the killing took place after Margaret allegedly confronted Candace about months-long discrepancies in her debit account at the bank.

Candace started using her mom's bank cards in March 2023. Margaret later made dispute transactions and opened a new account for her monthly pension and Social Security funds, prompting Candace to ask her youngest child to call the bank to ask for new debit cards.

Margaret reached out to her bank and requested them to send the cards to a different home owned by one of her relatives, "signaling that she knew the fraud was coming from inside her own house," according to The Washington Post.

Investigation showed that Candace suffocated her mom using a trashbag in the latter's bedroom in May 2023. She then burned her body in gasoline and dismembered her using a chainsaw. Candace coated the victim's remains in seasoning to cover up the smell before grilling them.

After the murder, Candace even pretended to be her mother on the phone as she asked them to transfer $1,000 (over P58,000) to her account.

Margaret was reported missing in June of the same year. Her remains were later found in garbage bags in her home's basement.

According to authorities, Candace initially put the blame on her two children with disabilities for Margaret's death but was found to have lied to police.

Aside from first- and second- degree murder, Candace is also facing charges for tampering with evidence and disposing a body in an unauthorized location.
