Commuters may soon use Mastercard on MRT-3, BGC and EDSA buses
Good news, commuters!
You may soon use Mastercard to pay for your fares when taking the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and the buses in Bonifacio Global City and on EDSA.
The credit card company has partnered with AF Payments Inc., which created the Beep cards that are being used at the moment.
The partnership is a bid to reduce long lines during peak hours and remove the need to carry tickets and cash.
“This is expected to benefit millions of Filipino commuters in Metro Manila, enhancing smart mobility through initiatives that bring our transit systems in line with global transport standards,” said Beep president and chief executive officer Jonathan Juan Moreno in a statement.
Mastercard and AF Payments are also looking forward to implementing the contactless payment scheme on ferries and other modes of transportation.
The move was in line with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap 2020-2023, which aims to digitize half of all the transactions in the country.
The Department of Transportation, meanwhile, is seeking for a unified fare collection system via debit/credit cards for all public utility vehicles, including jeepneys.
