Malacañang declares May 12 as special non-working holiday for elections

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared May 12 a special non-working holiday to allow Filipinos to vote in the national and local elections.

Malacañang released Proclamation No. 878, s. 2025 on Tuesday, May 6.

"There is a need to declare Monday, 12 May 2025, as a special (non-working) holiday to enable the people to properly exercise their right to vote," Marcos said.

Commission on Elections chairperson Erwin Garcia said on May 5 that the poll body asked the Palace to declare the holiday.

"Para mabigyan ng pagkakataon ang sambayanang Pilipino na mga botante na makaboto," he said.

A total of 18,320 national and local positions are on the ballots in the upcoming midterm elections. This includes 12 seats for senators, 63 seats for party-list representatives, 254 seats for members of the House of Representatives, 82 seats for governors, 82 seats for vice governors, 840 seats for Sangguniang Panlungsod members, 1,493 seats for municipal mayors, 1,493 seats for municipal vice mayors, 11,948 seats for Sangguniang Bayan members, 25 seats for BARMM Parliament Members, and 40 seats for BARMM party representatives.

There are 68,431,965 registered voters in the Philippines as of January 2025.
