Delta offers $30,000 to passengers aboard flight that crashed, flipped upside down
Delta Air Lines is offering $30,000 to each passenger aboard flight 4819 that crashed and flipped upside down while landing at Toronto airport.
The airline's representatives told ABC News that they are offering the amount to them, which “has no strings attached and does not affect rights.” It isn’t clear yet how the passengers can claim the offer.
The Delta Flight 4819 caught fire upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport from Minneapolis and then flipped upside down on the runway on Monday, Feb. 17.
All 76 passengers and four crew members were able to evacuate safely. Several of them, however, sustained injuries like "back sprains, head injuries, anxiety, some headaches, nausea, and vomiting due to the fuel exposure," said Cory Tkatch, commander of operations at Peel Regional Paramedic Services.
One child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s suffered critical injuries, according to medical transport organization Ornge.
The investigation on the accident is still ongoing.
Deborah Flint, Toronto Pearson President and CEO noted that there were “extreme conditions” at the airport last weekend due to separate snowstorms.
"Monday was a clear day, though, and it was an operational recovery day for Toronto Pearson," Flint said, per the outlet.
The report added that the Toronto airport had temporarily stopped flights due to the crash, with two runways remaining closed.
The airline, meanwhile, said Wednesday, Feb. 19 that it “will begin the process of reuniting customers with baggage and personal belongings as soon as possible after authorities have safely removed the items from the aircraft.”
"Our most pressing priority remains taking care of all customers and Endeavor crew members who were involved," Delta CEO Ed Bastian said.
