The Department of Health (DOH) on Jan. 8 reported 26,458 new COVID-19 cases, the highest ever number of infections recorded since the pandemic started.

DOH's COVID-19 bulletin showed that active cases are already over 102,000, with the cumulative COVID-19 tally inching from three million. The agency noted that 95.5% of the case count is mild and asymptomatic.

Over 1,600 patients have recovered from the disease, as total recoveries stood at 2.78 million.

Some 265 individuals, meanwhile, succumbed to COVID-19, with the death toll now over 52,000.

Of over 77,000 Filipinos tested since Jan. 6, the DOH said about 43.7% of them turned out positive for COVID-19.

The DOH said six laboratories have yet to turn in their data, though noted that all laboratories were operational on Jan. 6.

In the last 14 days, the DOH said the six labs with no reports just yet account for 3.6% of the samples tested and 5.4% of positive cases.

To date, the country has 43 Omicron cases on record, with Delta cases at 8,497.

The DOH, citing studies, said that one Omicron case can infect up to 10 people, as compared to Delta's 8.
