TRENDING: Filipino bakeshop says viral Duterte cake greeting issue an 'isolated incident'

Published Mar 31, 2025 9:58 am

A Filipino bakeshop has addressed the viral post about a cake greeting request for former president Rodrigo Duterte, who turned 80 on March 28.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, March 30, Goldilocks called it an "isolated incident," noting that they "truly believe in messages that celebrate, uplift, and bring people together—reflecting the joy and togetherness we've always valued."

"We are always happy to accommodate personalized messages on cakes that have space specially designed for greetings," it continued.

This comes after a screenshot of a Threads user's post tagging the store and complaining about their online order went viral on social media. It was reposted on different platforms, including the Facebook page We Are Millennials, garnering over 70,000 reactions and almost 6,000 shares as of writing.

"I usually buy cake [from your store] and nothing wrong, you always put the dedication," the user said. "This is what [happened] today! WHY?"

The user's post, partially cropped in the page's screenshot, included a photo of a bare chocolate cake as well as a screenshot of her dedication request.

The user was asking to have the message, "Happy 80th Birthday TATAY DIGONG," on the cake. The order was allegedly made in the store's Alturas Tagbilaran branch in Bohol.

"Tatay Digong" is the popular term of endearment of the supporters of Duterte.

In its statement, Goldilocks stressed that it understands "how much these moments mean."

"[W]e're taking steps to ensure every customer feels seen, included, and celebrated in every store, every time," it added.

Duterte turned another year older while under the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague in the Netherlands.

The former Chief Executive was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on March 11 following a warrant of arrest issued by the ICC via the International Criminal Police Organization.

He has been accused of being an "indirect co-perpetrator for the crime against humanity of murder pursuant to Article 7 (1)(a) of the Roman Statute."

Specifically, he was allegedly involved in the murder of at least 19 persons reported to be drug pushers or thieves who were killed by members of the Davao Death Squad in various locations in or around Davao City between 2011 and 2016, as well as the murder of at least 24 alleged criminals who were killed by or under the supervision of members of the Philippines law enforcement at various locations in the country between 2016 and 2019 during his term as president.

Duterte could be the first Asian former head of state to be indicted by the ICC. His pre-trial hearing is on Sept. 23, 2025. If the charges against him are confirmed, it could be months before the case eventually goes on trial, and years before a final judgment is rendered.
