Wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan missed a podium finish during the final round of the men’s 400 meters T52 event at the Olympic Stadium today, Aug. 27, in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Jerrold was set to finish 5th but was disqualified from the game due to lane infringement (Rule WPA 18.5a).

Jerrold advanced to the medals round earlier today after finishing fourth in the morning qualifying heats and seventh in the overall men’s 400-meter T52.

“T52” is the disability sports classification for athletes that can use their upper body (shoulder, elbow, and wrist) to propel their wheelchairs forward. There is poor to full muscle power in the fingers while trunk and leg function is absent.

Japan's Tomoki Sato nabbed the gold medal, United States’ Raymond Martin the silver, and Japan’s Hirokazu Ueyonabaru the bronze.

He clocked in at 1:00.80, his personal best record so far. This is Jerrold's second Paralympic bout after the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. He also served as the Philippines’ flag bearer for this year’s Paralympics.

The athlete started racing back in 2009. "I wanted to test myself, so I tried track. I had a friend who did wheelchair racing. We rode our wheelchairs from Montalban to Cubao,” he shared with paralympics.org.

“It took us about five hours, non-stop. I continued training, and that's when I started to become a national athlete."

Jerrold still has a long bout ahead of him, as he’s also set to compete in the men’s 1500m T2 tomorrow, Aug. 28, and the men’s 100m T52 on Thursday, Sept. 2.
