Former VP Leni Robredo may run for Naga City mayor in 2025—Lagman

Former Vice President Leni Robredo is reportedly eyeing to run for mayor in Naga City in the 2025 elections, Liberal Party president and Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman said.

Robredo's return to politics became a topic of discussion following current VP Sara Duterte's resignation from her post as Department of Education Secretary. The former presidential candidate's name was among those floated to replace Duterte as DepEd chief.

But on the topic of the ex-VP's plans for the coming 2025 poll, the LP president said there's a possibility that she could be running in her hometown.

"Ang last namin na pag-uusap ay siya ay tatakbo as mayor ng Naga City upang pagpatuloy ang program ng kanyang late husband," Lagman told reporters.

He added that Robredo will support the LP's senatorial slate, which so far includes the former VP's running mate Kiko Pangilinan, her past campaign manager Bam Aquino, and Chel Diokno.

LP spokesperson Atty. Leila De Lima said in February that they were "still convincing" Robredo to join their slate.

Meanwhile, about the DepEd Secretary post, Lagman told reporters that he is not expecting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to appoint Robredo in the vacant seat.

"Hindi namin ine-expect na siya ay aalukin ng Pangulo. Ngunit 'pag siya ay inalok, 'yan ay pag-aaralan mabuti at 'yan ay isang opportunity na ipagpatuloy ng ating Bise Presidente ang kanyang pagserbisyo sa taong bayan," he said.
