Thermos recalls 8.2 million jars, bottles over injury risk
Thermos is recalling 8.2 million insulated jars and bottles after receiving reports of consumer injuries from use of the products, including three who suffered permanent vision loss.
On April 30, the US company announced the recall of 5.8 million Stainless King 3000 and 3020 Food Jars, as well as about 2.3 million Sportsman 3010 Food and Beverage Bottles, over a design error that randomly ejects lids because of the lack of a pressure relief in the center, as reported by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Per Forbes, without a pressure relief, gas from the container's contents builds up inside. When the lid is even only partially dislodged, the built-up gas can push it out in a projectile with great force.
This omission lets gas build up in the container, potentially causing the lid to dislodge with more force than expected.
The items, ranging from 16-, 24-, to 40-ounce containers, were sold in a variety of colors at Target, Walmart, Amazon.com, and other retailers between March 2008 and July 2024.
Due to the design flaw, Thermos received 27 reports of consumers who were struck by a stopper that was ejected from the containers after opening. Injuries include lacerations that needed medical help. Three users were struck in the eye by the lid and now have permanent vision loss.
In a statement, Thermos confirmed its voluntary recall of the products, explaining the potential risk of the concerned jars and bottles.
"If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer," it read.
Thermos advised consumers who have the products to immediately stop using them. Customers are to then visit the website to file a claim for a pressure relief stopper or a replacement bottle, depending on the model bought.
