Heavy rainfall expected in Luzon, parts of Visayas starting Aug. 28: PAGASA
Keep your umbrellas handy; the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration says more rains are expected in Luzon and parts of Visayas starting Friday, Aug. 28, and continuing until Tuesday next week.
According to weather specialist Leanne Loreto, the habagat, which is still being pulled over parts of the Philippines by Typhoon Obet, is expected to bring heavier rains to Luzon and parts of Visayas.
Per Loreto, as of 2 a.m. on Aug. 27, cloud clusters hovering over the North Philippine Sea developed into a low-pressure area.
While it has not directly affected weather conditions in the country so far, it has a medium chance of developing into a typhoon in the next 48 hours, but is unlikely to make landfall.
As the country continues to experience rains in the wake of Typhoon Obet, the new low-pressure area, or LPA 08i, will also pull the habagat across Luzon and Western Visayas in the next four to five days.
Loreto said intense rainfall is expected in Northern and Central Luzon. "In the next few days, inaasahan natin na mas lalakas pa ang Habagat," she warned.
For Thursday, DOST-PAGASA sees between 50–100 mm of rain in Zambales and Occidental Mindoro, which may cause localized flooding and landslides.
By Friday, the same amount of rain is also expected in La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, and Bataan.
On Saturday, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro may experience 100–200 mm of rain, while Abra, Ilocos Sur, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite, and Batangas, in addition to the Northern provinces mentioned, may be inundated by 50–100 mm of rain.
"Ang nakikita natin ngayon na mga critical time doon sa mga pag-ulan natin ay between Saturday and Sunday, at posible pang magpatuloy 'yan hanggang Tuesday," Loreto said.
However, she added the LPA may still change course.
For Thursday, Western Luzon will be under cloudy skies. There is a high chance of scattered rainshowers in Batanes, Ilocos Region, CAR, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Batangas, and the Mindoro provinces. Areas in Eastern Luzon will experience higher temperatures, up to 34 degrees Celsius, with possible thunderstorms Thursday night.
Palawan and parts of Western Visayas are also affected by the Habagat. However, in the rest of Visayas and Mindanao, the weather will be hot and humid.
