OJ Simpson's cause of death has been disclosed over two weeks after his passing.

According to a report by PEOPLE Magazine, his longtime attorney Malcolm LaVergne revealed that Simpson died from metastatic prostate cancer. The disease, per Cancer Research, is a condition where the cancer "has spread from the prostate to other parts of the body." It's also known as advanced prostate cancer.

"I was pretty certain it was prostate cancer; ultimately, that was the cause," LaVergne said.

"He thought it had beaten it," he continued. "I thought this was done, but you know how cancers go. They come back, and they come back with a vengeance."

Simpson died on April 10, his family announced. He was cremated seven days later. He was 76.

While he was known as a former Hall of Fame football player, Simpson became more famous for being an acquitted murderer.

In 1994, Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman were found murdered outside her home in Los Angeles.

Brown had been stabbed in the throat so savagely she had almost been decapitated. Simpson immediately became the prime suspect.

Five days after the murders, he led police on a wild car chase which was broadcast live and watched by millions.

He eventually surrendered and went on trial in January 1995. It ended in a not-guilty verdict, dividing the United States.

Simpson’s nine-month trial, dubbed as the trial of the century, has been the subject of several television shows, books, and documentaries.

An episode of the 2016 anthology television series titled The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story won multiple Emmy awards including outstanding limited series.
