Doctor allegedly tries to throw wife off cliff, strikes her head with rock after refusing to take photo
A doctor in Hawaii allegedly tried to push his wife off a cliff and then struck her head with a rock because she supposedly didn't want to take a photo with him.
Hawaii News Now reported that the police arrested Gerhardt Konig on the evening of March 24 after a six-hour manhunt.
Konig, 46, allegedly attacked his 36-year-old wife, who wasn't named, off the Pali Lookout trail around 10 a.m. of that day.
He also allegedly tried to prick her with syringes.
The outlet, citing the Hawaii Emergency Medical Services, said the wife suffered injuries to her face and head and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Sanoe Kaaihue, executive director of the nonprofit Women Helping Women, noted that they're "prominent people" in the community.
“DV (domestic violence) does not discriminate," Kaaihue said. "I think time and time again, people are so surprised when they hear that it’s their teachers, it’s neighbors, it’s attorneys. It’s everybody from every single walk of life [that] can be affected.”
“What you’re seeing now is an outward expression of the things that they’ve been experiencing within the household,” she added.
Konig is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge pending investigation.
The police didn't disclose his background, but his LinkedIn profile states that he's an anesthesiologist and has been on Maui since 2023.
Konig also served as an assistant professor of Anesthesiology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
Maui Health also confirmed that they employed Konig through an independent agency, having worked at various medical facilities across the Valley Isle, including Maui Memorial Medical Center.
It suspended Konig amid the investigation.
