UPLB students can soon rent e-bikes, e-scooters in campus

There will be a new way to get around the University of the Philippines - Los Baños campus soon as students will be able to rent e-bikes and e-scooters just through an app.

Tipaklong Sustainable Mobility, Corp., a bike rental business owned by UPLB graduates, will provide a fleet of e-bikes and e-scooters for students to use.

This effort is part of a green mobility initiative promoting more environment-friendly modes of transport in the university. A feasibility study will also be conducted with the initiative to determine distance traveled, trips, carbon dioxide emissions avoided, and other relevant data.

"This is us taking a revolutionary step. As a national university, we need to be conscious of our carbon footprint and proactively engage our constituents with our efforts to be steadfast stewards of our environment. One way of looking at it is by focusing on our transport system," vice chancellor for community affairs Robert Cereno said.

In addition to the bikes for rent, the university will also install more bike racks and provide guidelines for developing bike lanes on campus. The campus security will also receive bicycles to use during patrols.

The school has also partnered with other organizations and alumni associations to put up more bike racks.

Other details about the app as well as how to rent them have yet to be revealed.

UPLB has a total land area of 14,665 hectares which consists of experimental sites, field laboratories, and stations.
