Looking to improve your knowledge about visual journalism and artificial intelligence?

The Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines is bringing back their Romeo Gacad Lecture Series for the second time this June, with an aim to teach how one can spot AI-generated content as well as deepen one's understanding of visual literacy and photojournalism.

"Digital technology revolutionized photojournalism. It led to faster workflows and real-time, wider dissemination of visual news. The technology has also opened the doors of photojournalism to a more diverse base of practitioners—thanks to new publishing platforms outside the traditional media. It also paved the way to more in-depth and immersive storytelling," FOCAP said.

"But as we reap the benefits of digital technology in our profession, it also comes with its biggest downside—the ease of making fake or doctored images, which aids in the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation," they added.

They emphasized that as the "technology used in journalism advances, so are the threats of artificial intelligence-generated images and video."

The lecture will be led by Jake Soriano, deputy head of digital investigation in Asia Pacific of Agence France-Presse, and Carljoe Javier, Executive Director and Chief AI Ethicist of Data and AI Ethics PH.

The event is entirely free for practicing journalists, journalism, and communication students, but keep in mind that it's on a first-come-first-served basis.

The lecture will take place on June 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Lanson Place at Mall of Asia. If you aren't able to attend personally, there's also an option to participate online.
