A post by netizen Angelo Gabriel Fuentebella made the rounds online as he shared his experience with a Pinoy beggar in Sampaloc, Manila.
The Facebook user recounted to PhilSTAR L!fe how a little boy approached him and his friend to beg for alms while they were hanging out on the street. “Honestly, nagulat at natawa lang kami kasi parang ang bilis ng mga pangyayari,” he said with a laugh.
“Pagkasabi naming wala kaming barya, bigla siyang naglabas ng board na ‘yan na may QR code,” he recalled.
Angelo said he ended up not transferring money to the e-wallet still as they found it “sketchy” that the kid even had that board. “Medyo sketchy kasi baka mapunta lang naman sa iba ‘yung ibibigay namin,” he said.
The post garnered various reactions on social media.

Volleyball player Michele experienced the same thing during her recent Singapore trip, where a local gave her the option to go digital when they asked for money. “May nanlimos dito sa SG, sabi ko sorry no cash. Pinakitaan ako ng barcode,” she wrote in a tweet.
Aside from the Philippines and Singapore, other Asian countries like India and China have likewise reported the common practices of beggars using QR codes at present.
