Ateneo de Manila University begins search for next university president
The Ateneo de Manila University announced that it will begin the search for its next president as Fr. Roberto "Bobby" Yap's extended term nears its end.
In the memo, Board of Trustees Chairperson Bernadine Siy said that they will form a Search Committee to select the university's next president, with more details on the committee and selection process to be announced later.
She added that the decision came after a process of prayerful discernment, careful consideration, and consultations with members of the University community.
Siy said the Board acknowledged the challenges faced by the university community in recent months and said its deliberations sought to "ensure accountability and continuity, renewal and care for persons."
She added that the Board has reviewed all relevant information on the team building tragedy on June 8, which claimed the lives of its athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, and will release its report and statement separately. Siy also assured that the Board will continue to carry out its governance and oversight responsibilities during the leadership transition.
In the same memo, the Board also announced that it had extended Yap's term until May 31, 2027, saying the move was intended to provide stability and continuity for Academic Year 2026–2027.
According to the Board, the extension would give the University time to address issues stemming from the June 8 incident, implement reforms, and ensure a smooth leadership transition, as well as strengthen succession planning by making leadership and trustee appointments well in advance.
It also expressed its appreciation to Yap for his six years of service, citing his leadership in steering Ateneo through the COVID-19 pandemic, advancing the AMDG 2030 initiative, and strengthening the University's financial stewardship, among others.
"As Ateneo enters this period of transition, we do so with gratitude for what has been accomplished, humility about what must be learned, and confidence in the strength of our community and the mission that continues to guide the University," the memo read.
"The Board is committed to pursuing the reforms needed in the aftermath of the crisis and to strengthening the University's governance, culture, and care for all members of the Ateneo community," it concluded.
