Stronger together

"Hindi tayo nag-iisa sa pagbabago—ang bawat isa sa atin ay isang bahagi ng mas malaking kuwento."

"We are not alone in change—each of us is a part of a greater story."—Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical (2018)

Throughout childhood, children are taught to be independent to build confidence and autonomy. Although being self-sufficient enables young people to recognize their strengths and shape their identities, it can also inadvertently teach them that success is a solo climb, that staying on track is a solitary pursuit, and that struggle is something to be hidden.

Nothing is wrong with being independent in itself; in fact, it is essential to personal growth.

However, we should not equate independence with leading a life of isolation.

We humans are inherently social. We need connections to ground us, social interactions to make us feel included, feedback to help us improve, and a supportive environment to realize our dreams.

This is a truth that Filipinos have known for generations, as seen in the spirit of bayanihan. Long before it was written into any philosophy, bayanihan was already a way of life. Entire communities came together to move a bahay kubo, or traditional stilt house, not because they had to, but because it was simply what people did for one another.

Although we no longer transport houses on our shoulders, this sense of oneness still lives within us. Despite who we are today and what we have achieved, we are cut from the same fabric and remain stronger together.

Stronger Together is not just a theme; it is a resounding reminder to keep our connections strong and inclusive. It calls on us to resist societal apathy, alienation, and atomization—unintended byproducts of globalization and hyperconnectivity.

Ang Huling El Bimbo, the musical that inspired this year's theme, illustrated the profound impact of indifference, silence, and inaction in fracturing relationships.

As the story unfolded and its characters drifted apart, broke, and eventually reunited with a shared purpose, it underscored the value of showing up for one another. It highlighted how compassion and extending grace to those still finding their footing can go a long way.

This year, we challenge the youth to stand side by side through hardships and victories. We urge you to choose to be stronger together because true success can never be built in a vacuum—it is built through the encouragement, camaraderie, and energy of the people around you.
