Woman passes away after being in a coma for 31 years from car crash

A woman has died after being in a coma for over three decades following a tragic car crash.

Italian media outlets reported that Miriam Visintin passed away due to cardiac arrest last week. The latter figured in a car accident in Casoni di Mussolente in Italy on Christmas Eve in 1991, which left her with an inoperable brain injury.

Her husband Angelo Farina stayed by her side while she was in a coma for 31 years until she took her last breath at the San Bassiano hospital where she was confined due to pleural effusion, which, according to health information website WebMD, “is an unusual amount of fluid around the lung.”

“I am happy for her. She is finally up there in peace and in paradise. I think she has suffered a lot over the years. We had only been married a year and a half when tragedy struck. We were young and had so many projects. She was very fond of children,” Farina said in an interview with local website Fanpage.it.

“Fate has been cruel to her, too cruel. She didn’t deserve all of this. I keep saying it and I will keep saying it in the future as well,” he added.

Angelo and Miriam exchanged “I do’s” in June 1990, just a year before the tragic accident happened. They lived together in San Giuseppe di Cassola.

Cassola mayor Alda Maroso offered his sincerest condolences to Miriam and her loved ones, putting the spotlight on her husband’s love. “What struck me a lot, in addition to the tragedy of a vegetative life that lasted 31 years, is the closeness of her husband, perpetuated in daily gestures of love for so long.”

"I don't know how many would be capable of that. In a very self-centered world, this example gives reason to believe that humanity still exists,” he said.
