Leap Day mom gives birth to daughter on Leap Day

Babies born during Leap Day, or Feb. 29, is already a rare event in itself. It just got rarer as a Leap Day mother gave birth to her child on Leap Day.

ABC News reported that Dr. Kai Sun—an assistant professor of medicine and a rheumatologist at Duke Health in North Carolina—and her husband, Michael Paik, welcomed their daughter Chloe at 5:12 a.m., weighing in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces (3 kg).

“My husband and I were just saying how cool it would be if she were born on the same day as my birthday. And somehow, it happened," Sun told Good Morning America.

What makes Chloe’s birth even more special is that she’s a rainbow baby.

"We had a miscarriage almost exactly a year ago,” the mother of three said.

Despite some challenges like some “abnormal finding” on the initial ultrasound, Sun’s COVID-19, and her falling on her belly during the third trimester, “everything turned out well,” according to Sun.

Sun is looking forward to getting discharged soon so she can rest at home and introduce Chloe to the family—as well as a belated birthday celebration.

"And we'll have cake, of course,” she said.
